to be fair, Andy, every municipality has different rules, so I find these helpful. but, you are right, so many people haven't a clue - and don't much care.
Our city has blue bags in which we put our recyclables. I was thrilled when Muncie finally came around. My hubby and I were recycling years before the city did. We had to separate things and then travel to wherever the bins were located, but we did it. I passed that on to my first grade students.
We're big on recycling here in Oregon and I hate to see places that don't care about it. Such an easy way to be a good citizen of Earth. We see more and more places recycling now as we travel.
We don't have curbside pickup here so we have to haul stuff to the recycling center six miles away. Even though I combine it with other errands, I suspect that driving out of our way uses up more resources than we are saving.
i wish we had the bins with our trash company here. in ca we had one for paper products, one for grass/yard clippings, one for paper and plastics and one for all other trash...we do live between to recycling centers though but it's a bit inconvenient to store it then haul it.
We have three bins in Melbourne. Green for garden waste; Yellow for recycling and dark bottle green for general household rubbish that goes to landfill. The council distributes guides as to what goes where! Thanks for hosting!
Every so often I have to go look for the guidelines of what not to put in our blue bin. maybe I should laminate it and tape it to the inside of the lid.

Our bins are black with yellow lids for the recyclables, red lid for general rubbish and green lid for garden refuse.

I'm getting more and more linked in with recycling...
